NORTHLAKE — Sometimes, the best offense is a good defense.
That certainly rang true Friday as the Leyden Eagles (2-1, 1-0) soared to a 27-0 win over defending conference champs Addison Trail (1-2, 0-1).
The Leyden D forced five three-and-outs in the first half alone, and fed the visiting Blazers a big donut. But that only tells half the story.
The rest was written by an offense that started out most of its drives in opposing territory and was able to convert three into touchdowns.
“Our defense was great,” senior running back Mickey Gulo said. “It was huge to be starting with that kind of field position.”
It will be important for the Eagles defense to repeat that performance as it heads into a two-week road trip to conference rivals. Up first is a Downers South team that hasn’t had much trouble putting points on the board, averaging 30 a game. Then comes undefeated Hinsdale South that’s averaged 47 points in three games.
“It was a tough loss last week,” said head coach Tom Cerasani, recalling a 17-3 setback against Hinsdale Central Aug. 31. “It’s always good to win a conference game.”
The Eagles defense contributed directly to the scoring when it blocked a punt early in the second quarter and junior Quintin Morgan carried the loose ball into the end zone.
That unit also contributed to the Eagles’ three touchdown drives. Two began in Addison Trail territory; the one that didn’t began at the Eagles’ 45.
That was still good enough to set up a touchdown by quarterback Michael Smith, who ran for two and threw for another.
Gulo had good things to say about his quarterback, who went 6-of-12 for 127 yards.
“He’s an all-around athlete,” Gulo said. “He will throw, run, hit. He’ll do anything.”
“I thought (Smith) played a very smart game,” Cerasani added.
But it will take more than another efficient game from Smith to carry Leyden to victory against its next two conference rivals.
“Our guys played really physical,” said Cerasani. “They really did a great job.
“(Addison Trail) is a tough opponent. I think we really showed what we can do.”
