Senior Jackie Bartnicki’s early hot streak helped continue Guerin Prep’s great form as she connected three times from three-point range in the opening quarter to propel the Gators to their 11th straight win in a 43-28 victory over Marian Central Catholic on Friday night in River Grove.
Bartnicki led all scorers with 17 points. The Gators had three players in double figures as sophomore Becky Bartnicki had 11 points and junior Sara Brodner contributed 10 on the night.
“We went out hard so we wouldn’t have to work harder later,” Jackie Bartnicki said. “They were just open shots, and I decided to keep taking them, and they kept falling. My teammates also told me to just keep shooting.”
Guerin (25-3, 9-1) put the clamps on the Hurricanes allowing just seven points in the first half including holding the visitors to just a single field goal in the second quarter. The Gators clinched the Suburban Christian Conference Gold Division with the victory.
Marian Central (10-13, 2-4) picked things up in the second half outscoring the Gators overall thanks in large part to seniors Simone Awe and Susan Piggot. Piggot scored all five of her points in the third quarter while Awe notched nine of her team-high 11 points in the final quarter of play.
“We’ve lost two starting point guards, and they hurt us with their pressure,” said Hurricanes’ head coach Jackie Budmayr. “It’s kind of hard to chip away at the lead when they’re still pressing, and we’re down 20.”
