Leyden turned in another strong performance in a girls bowling tournament, placing third at the Fred Green Classic, hosted by Fenton at Wood Dale Bowl on Saturday.
Oswego won the competition with 6,027 pins, followed by Lockport (5,748), Leyden (5,590), St. Charles East (5,556), Elk Grove (5,447), Glenbard East (5,387), Schaumburg (5,281), Chicago Christian (5,168), Resurrection (5,160), Antioch (5,128), Plainfield Central (5,116), Rolling Meadows (4,983), Addison Trail (4,934), Hersey (4,913), Lemont (4,874), Hinsdale South (4,852), Libertyville (4,797), Sycamore (4,780), Morton (4,778), Fenton (4,762), Willowbrook (4,573), Grayslake North (4,236) and Wheeling (3,988).
“These tournaments are good preparation for the sectional and state tournaments,” said Leyden coach Chris Aylward. “And our girls like to bowl in tournaments. We’ve been stronger in tournaments than in dual meets, and I think it’s because of the camaraderie they have. They do well together and like the set-up during tournaments when they’re together.”
Reba Hall was the top finisher for the Eagles on Saturday, placing ninth with 1,193 total pins. Brianna Andrew of Chicago Christian and Oswego’s Tara Wagner tied for the top score with 1,311. The top 15 finishers were recognized as medalists.
Other Leyden contributors were Erika Pimental (1,129), Ashley Kriston (1,104), Nicole Pitsenbarger (1,051) and Danielle Trevino, who was ill but still contributed a total of 1,050.

Leyden senior Jeanine Hannoun and the Eagles aren’t ready to throw in the towel, even after suffering a 51-28 nonconference loss to Maine East at home on Saturday, which kept Leyden (0-19, 0-7) winless overall.
“We really haven’t given up; we want to win a game before the season ends, and we still have the energy to do that,” said Hannoun, who led the Eagles with a team-best eight points in the loss to Maine East. “It does get a little frustrating, but we do some good things for part of the game; we have to maintain it for the whole game.”
The Eagles were competitive in the first half, jumping out to a 9-6 lead after one quarter and staying close with a 22-15 deficit at halftime.
However, a free throw by Hannoun accounted for Leyden’s only point in the third quarter, when Maine East extended its advantage to 39-16.
Hannoun and Kathy Wojtulewicz each had four points for the Eagles in Friday’s 54-19 loss to York.
