BOYS BASKETBALL: Four different players scored in double figures for host Leyden Friday night, as the Eagles ran their winning streak to five with a 74-60 West Suburban Gold victory over Willowbrook. Alex Herrera led the way for Leyden (15-7, 6-4) with a game-high 26 points and seven assists.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Downers Grove South had the defensive pressure turned up right from the onset Saturday in a 60-33 win over visiting Leyden in the West Suburban Gold. The win by the Mustangs sets up a conference season finale at 6 p.m. Friday at undefeated Proviso East, which is undefeated heading into a Tuesday night game against Leyden.

The beat goes on for the Guerin girls’ basketball team as it racked up three more wins last week to run its winning streak to 12 games. The Gators also claimed the Suburban Christian Conference Gold Division title with their win at Immaculate Conception on Feb. 1. Guerin’s wrestlers went into Saturday night’s Walther Lutheran regional with some big goals, and they were able to put up a great performance with a fourth-place team finish and came away with six wrestlers advancing to next week’s sectional meet in Plano. Senior Alex Sullivan recovered from his only loss on the season to win the 182-pound division with three other Gators finishing in second. Another Gator took third while a fourth-place finisher found out he will be going to the sectional because of a withdrawal. The four Leyden players competing in all three games were Hall (639), Kriston (613), Danielle Trevino (595) and Erika Pimentel (556). Contributing scores in two games each were Nicole Witczak (353), Nicole Pitsenbarger (310) and Jeanette Treto (271). Guerin was still working through some injuries and illness last week as the Gators had to forfeit eight weight classes on Jan. 18, against Walther Lutheran and Montini before losing to Illiana Christian and Elmwood Park the following night. Undefeated Alex Sullivan was held out of the lineup against Walther and Montini as he is still trying to navigate through some knee pain and was dealing with a cold, but he came back to post two more wins against Illiana and Elmwood Park. Host Leyden lost a West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet to Willowbrook Jan. 19, 125.90-111.65. Kara Urbaniak finished with a 7.38 average in all-around competition, which was good for fifth place. Willowbrook’s Liz Nocek (8.10) won the all-around. An 8.40 in vault by Urbaniak was the high score of the meet for the Eagles. The sophomore also was the team’s top scorer in uneven parallel bars (7.25) and floor exercise (7.60).
