Finishing second was anything but frustrating for the Leyden boys tennis team Saturday in the West Suburban Gold. The Eagles have placed third in the league in several recent seasons, but it had been at least 25 years since a runner-up finish was achieved. The last conference championship for the Eagles came in 1977 by East Leyden, before West and East teams were combined in 1981. This year’s league championship was determined by combining points earned during conference dual meets with points accumulated at the league meet at Hinsdale South Friday and Saturday. Adrianna Sanchez accounted for all of Leyden’s points at the state badminton tournament as the Eagles finished tied for 27th with 1.5 points. Sanchez opened the tournament with a win over West Suburban Conference Gold Division foe Emily Spencer of Hinsdale South (21-14, 21-16). She lost in the second round to Jasmine Liu of Wheaton Warrenville South (13-21, 21-11, 21-12). In the consolation bracket, Sanchez defeated Wendy Yang of Neuqua Valley 21-14, 21-14, before bowing out of the touranment with a 21-14, 21-11 loss to Brina Gartlen of Hinsdale Central. Every year for the last four seasons, the Leyden girls softball team has returned from its spring-break trip and fallen into a slump. The trend has left Kurt Schuett, Leyden’s softball coach, puzzled and asking why. “That’s the million-dollar question. If I could answer that I’d probably be coaching at DePaul or something,” said Schuett, with a laugh. This year has presented Leyden, which was the Sun-Times’ No. 1-ranked team entering this season, with a troubling mixture of problems. On the forefront of those problems were injuries.
