Special Olympics Illinois athletes, coaches and volunteers from around the state gathered this week in the Galena area for the annual Winter Games. Chestnut Mountain Resort was the site of cross-country and alpine skiing and snowshoeing competition, and Mystique Ice Center (Dubuque, Iowa) was the venue for speed skating and figure skating events. Individuals in attendance included 400 athletes, 200 coaches, 100 family members and more than 350 volunteers. Athletes competed in divisions based on their gender, age and comparable entry scores, giving each athlete a chance to succeed on a level playing field. Medals were awarded for the first …

They were playful songs she used to sing to her children in the car or at home, anywhere where she could put a smile on their faces. And anywhere where she could continue to teach them Yiddish. Dr. Khane-Faygl Turtletaub of Skokie always sang her made-up songs to her kids in Yiddish, a language she wanted to pass down to them. A Yiddish teacher at Northwestern University, Turtletaub is now trying to pass down her treasured language to other children as well. Air Force Airman Daniel L. Diaz graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Airman Diaz completed an eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
