Bail was denied Monday for a Northlake man accused of climbing a balcony to break into his ex-girlfriend’s Woodridge home, then fatally stabbing and raping her because she was dating someone new.
Adam Belmont, 23, is accused of slaying Alyssa Van Meter of Woodridge about 9 p.m. Saturday, the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office said. Belmont was ordered held without bail by Judge Alex McGimpsey.
Belmont was charged with two counts of murder and one count each of aggravated criminal sexual assault and home invasion.
Prosecutors allege Belmont went to Van Meter’s apartment on Forest Drive, climbed up an outside balcony and through a window. Once inside, he confronted his ex-girlfriend and an argument turned into a fight.
Belmont choked Van Meter until she was unconscious, then stabbed her one time in the chest, piercing her heart, the state’s attorney’s office said. After stabbing her, Belmont sexually assaulted her before running away.
Woodridge police were called to a report of a burglary about 11:30 p.m. and found Van Meter dead on the bedroom floor. Authorities arrested Belmont a few hours later.
“We knew early in the investigation that this was an isolated incident which led us to the victim’s ex-boyfriend,” Woodridge Police Chief Ken Boehm said in a statement.
Belmont’s next court appearance is Jan. 14 before Judge Blanche Fawell. If convicted, he faces up to natural life in prison.
