A 36-year-old Northlake man who pleaded guilty to breaking into a home in 2010 and tying up the two people inside was sentenced to 18 years in prison last week.
Jesus Hernandez, of 233 E. Dewey, was sentenced to 18 years in prison by Judge George Bakalis for breaking into a Lombard home in fall 2010. Hernandez pleaded guilty Jan. 4 to one count of home invasion.
Hernandez, wearing a ski mask and armed with a BB gun, broke into the home of Anthony Gilio at about 1:30 p.m. Oct. 30, 2010. Hernandez handcuffed Gilio’s hands behind his back and ordered him to lie on the floor, then duct-taped Gilio’s teenage daughter’s hands.
As Hernandez searched the house, Gilio’s daughter was able to free herself and call 911. When he realized police had been alerted, Hernandez fled, but was arrested later that day by Lombard police.
Hernandez must serve at least 50 percent of the sentence before he is eligible for parole. He was given credit for time served in the DuPage County Jail.
“Everyone has the right to feel safe in their own home,” Assistant State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said. “Mr. Hernandez violated the sanctity of his victim’s home and for that he will spend a significant amount of time behind bars.”
