Surprises await families who geocache in Oak Park’s parks.

“Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunt over 5 million people are enjoying worldwide,” said Diane Stanke, manager of communications for the Park District of Oak Park.

“Anybody can do it,” Program Manager Shari Wenzel said. “You’re looking for a canister, footlocker or water bottle covered in camouflage tape. It will be hidden in a tree or stump or by the base of a bush.”

All ages can learn to geocache with a GPS unit or smartphone, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13 at Fox Park, 624 S. Oak Park Ave. The cost is $5 per family. The park district’s caches will contain tokens. The first 40 people to turn in five tokens will receive a paperweight. If you can’t make it to the class, pick up a clue sheet at Hedges Administrative Center, 218 Madison St., Oak Park starting Friday, Sept. 14.

Youth serves

Kids Helping Kids is the motto of the 11th annual LemonAid, a fundraiser held every Sept. 11 on the 700 block of Bonnie Brae in River Forest. Bring your family between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday for lemonade, popcorn, baked goods and entertainment. This year, donations will support Sarah’s Inn, which protects women and their families from domestic violence.
