Truck stop proposed for Entenmann’s site

NORTHLAKE

A truck stop could take the place of the former Entenmann’s property in Northlake.

McShane Development of Rosemont has applied for a hearing in front of the Northlake Zoning Board of Appeals and Plan Commission to request a special use permit at 300 W. North Ave.

The company wants to build a travel center with fuel pumps, a convenience store, restaurant, vehicle wash station and mobile service center with locker rooms, according to papers filed with the city.

The ZBA and Plan Commission will hear the proposal on Dec. 6. Northlake Mayor Jeff Sherwin anticipates it will come in front of the City Council on Dec. 17.

“I think it’s a good idea, given the amount of truck traffic we have in that area,” Sherwin said. “Everybody wants to see manufacturing, but manufacturing jobs are few and far between. It’s far away from the residential areas and we get sales taxes off of the diesel fuel and gasoline.”

The former Entenmann’s site is 10.38 acres. It has 6B tax status, meaning it is assessed at 10 percent of its market value during its first 10 years, 15 percent in the 11th year and 20 percent in its 12th year. Normally, industrial properties are assessed at 25 percent of their value.

Video gaming

In other news, aldermen have voted to allow veterans’ organizations with a liquor license — meaning the American Legion Post — to offer video gaming. The Post can obtain up to five machines.

Only members or their guests can use the machines.~.
