Northlake DUI arrests triple

Updated: June 4, 2012 10:37AM

A simple change in allocating officers has bumped up the number of drunken driving arrests by Northlake police.

At the beginning of 2012, patrol Comdr. Ken Byars switched around his officers.

“We didn’t have that many (arrests) last year,” Byars said. “To boost up the number, we figured” things had to be changed.

Byars switched several officers who are more experienced in dealing with drunken drivers to the midnight shift. The majority of drunken driving arrests happen between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.

The switch appears to have made a difference.

During the first three months of 2011, police arrested seven people on charges of driving under the influence, said Comdr. Jay Millitello. For the same period in 2012, officers arrested 22 people.

And from April 13-18, Northlake police arrested seven people suspected of drunken driving.
